Visiual Facilitation/Recording

Graphic Facilitation

Helping conversations become clearer through visual thinking.

Graphic Facilitation is a creative facilitation technique that uses words, diagrams and illustrations to capture ideas as conversations unfold.

Whether supporting a workshop, community engagement event or strategic discussion, visual facilitation helps people explore ideas, identify connections and create a shared understanding of complex topics.

For me, Graphic Facilitation is rarely a standalone service. More often, it forms part of a wider engagement process, helping communities, organisations and partnerships make their thinking visible and capture conversations in an engaging and memorable way.

The Challenge

Traditional meetings often rely on written notes or lengthy reports that can lose the energy and connections created during the discussion.

Graphic Facilitation offers a different approach, capturing ideas visually as conversations develop. By making key themes and relationships visible, it helps participants reflect, contribute and build on each other's thinking.

Representative Projects

Graphic Facilitation has been used to support a variety of engagement activities and events, including:

  • Aberdeenshire Libraries engagement events
  • Community Empowerment workshops
  • Nexos Health & Safety Forum Theatre event
  • Community Action Planning workshops
  • Local Place Planning engagement
  • Visual summaries and engagement materials for community consultations

My Approach

Every Graphic Facilitation session begins by listening.

👂 Listen
Listening beyond the words to understand key themes, relationships and emerging ideas.

✏️ Capture
Translating conversations into clear visual language using words, illustrations, symbols and structure.

🔗 Connect
Highlighting relationships, identifying patterns and making complex conversations easier to understand.

📄 Share
Creating a lasting visual resource that can continue to support communication, learning and future action.

Outcomes

Graphic Facilitation helps organisations to:

  • Encourage participation and collaboration.
  • Make complex discussions easier to understand.
  • Capture ideas in real time.
  • Create a shared understanding.
  • Improve communication.
  • Produce engaging visual resources that continue to add value long after the event.

More importantly, it helps people feel heard, because they can literally see their ideas becoming part of the conversation.
